Dress To Impress: How To Look Professional, Classy, And Stylish For A Job Interview In The Fashion Industry

Dress The Part For Your Interview

No matter what industry you are pursuing, it is always of the utmost importance to look polished, professional, and put together.  However, while many interviews look for applicants to arrive dressed in a suit with a pair of closed-toe, three inch, black heels, the world of fashion is looking for something entirely different! The first step to landing that dream job, is looking the part.  If you believe that you look and feel like you belong, then your interviewer will be more likely to feel the same way.

Rule #1:  Research The Company

Do Research On The Company

I’m sure you all know that you obviously need to do your homework before you show up for your interview, but what you also need to do, is research the clothes and the style of the brand.  By looking at the current and past collections of the company, you will get a sense of the style and type of clothing they offer.  When choosing your outfit, you should then take into account the type of clothes they sell and try your best to fit with that look.  This will give your interviewer the sense that you are the right fit for the company and that you venerate the image that the line portrays.

Rule #2: Wear Their Clothes

Wear Their Clothes - Devil Wears Prada Closet

If you’re interviewing with a design house, try and wear something that is from their line if possible.  I know when you’re looking for a job money can sometimes be tight and the places you’re interviewing may not necessarily be affordable, but even if it is something small (the cheapest thing they sell!), it will really set you apart from others who have never worn the label, and it will allow you to be able to speak from personal experience when asked what you like about the brand.

Rule #3:  When In Doubt, Over-Dress

Undredressed vs. Overdressed For A Fashion Job Interview

When you’re going to an interview, it is always better to over-dress rather than under-dress.  You would much rather be the girl that they remember because of her impeccable outfit and her professional look, rather than the one they remember only because she looked ridiculous and inappropriate.  You want your potential boss/interviewer to be able to envision you in a position higher than the one you’re applying for, so make sure you don’t look like a bum!

 Rule #4:  Wear New Shoes

Wear New Shoes To Your Interview - Christian Louboutin

While you don’t have to go out and buy a pair of brand new, $1,000 Louboutin heels (although, it could never hurt!), you should make sure the shoes that you wear are either new or appear to be new.  You never want to show up in a pair of shoes that look like they are old and ragged.  The nicer and cleaner your shoes appear, the more put together your whole look will seem.

Rule #5:  Always Steer Towards The Conservative Side

Dress Conservatively - Prada Shift Dress

You would be surprised at how many women think it is okay to wear a low cut shirt or a short dress/skirt to an interview in the fashion industry… They think, “Oh I just need to look fashionable and I will have that job in a minute”, when in reality yes, looking good is a huge factor, but maintaining a professional appearance and having the right experience and background is just as important as what you are wearing!

With that being said, keep it classy ladies! Make sure you are wearing more conservative options. If you’re wearing a dress, it should come to (or below) the knee and it should not be revealing or low cut AT ALL! For example, the Prada shift dress pictured above is a perfect option that is professional, conservatice, and extremely fashionable!  If you’re wearing a top with pants or a skirt, make sure the top is not too revealing or low cut.  If you’re wearing a skirt, make sure it is an appropriate length (same guidelines as a dress!).

With these five simple tips, you’re sure to land that job that you’ve been dreaming of your entire life! Good luck with that interview, go get ’em girl! :)

Mallzee: “Changing The Way The World Shops Online”

Who Knew…. A One Stop Online Shopping Mall! - Online Mall Experience

What Is Mallzee?

Cally Russell - Founder and CEO Of Mallzee is a website that allows shoppers to was designed to make online shopping more of a fun an enjoyable experience, rather than feeling like a chore!  Started about a year ago by Cally Russell, CEO and founder of Mallzee, the site was launched earlier this year and has already seen a huge amount of growth (I mean who wouldn’t want to use this awesome website that offers the best way to shop online?!). The mission statement of the company is “Mallzee find you your style”, and I would have to say, after only a little bit of experimenting with the site, that mission statement definitely holds true!

How Does Mallzee Work? - Brands

Partnering with stores such as Accessorize, ASOS, Betsey Johnson, Bloomingdales, Forever 21, French Connection, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Urban Outfitters, to name just a few; and after following just a few
simple steps, you too could be shopping at all the retailers on! These steps include:

What Mallzee Means To Me…

While I have not had a ton of experience with Mallzee (being that it’s so new and all…), but I have done some (“window”) shopping in the past few days and what can I say… I. LOVE. IT.

I must admit, I have never personally found shopping online to be a “chore” (the “new” Mallzee way, or the old fashioned way), but I know that most people out there do! As I have mentioned in the past, I have a bit of a “shopping problem” (as my family likes to call it). When I went away to college in a small town where the options as far as stores (and the variety of different stores!) is extremely limited (…and let me tell you, most of the choices that are available are definitely not places that I would really want to shop anyway!) compared to what I had grown up with and was used to. So, needless to say, without any other options (other than going home every time I need, okay okay… wanted, to go shopping), I turned to shopping online.  This quickly became a hobby and stress reliever (along with running!) for me to escape from all of my reading, papers, studying, exams, you name it.  So, as I’m sure you can now see, I loved shopping online before I discovered Mallzee… but, you have no idea how much more I love it now! (Look out wallet… this could be bad for you!)

Back to what I was getting at before I got side tracked and rambling… (shocking, I know)

However, for those of you who do not like shopping online due to the annoyance and hassle of going to each separate website and making multiple orders with multiple shipping fees, etc. that is where Mallzee comes into play.  It is also perfect for those of you who cringe at just the thought of going to the mall, by using Mallzee you do not have to spend as much time shopping online as before, but you also do not have to go to the mall (causing a spike in your blood pressure, anxiety, and gray hair count) either.

Now, what more could anyone want or possibly think of?! (I surely couldn’t come up with anything… You’re one smart cookie, Cally Russell (CEO and Founder of Mallzee)!

Last Minute Beach Bod… 6 Exercises To Get Your 6 Pack Back!

Looking For A Quick Fix To Get That 6 Pack Back Before Your Beach Trip? These 6 Ab Exercises Are Sure To Help You Get Back Your Sexy Beach Body

1.  Ab Crunch

Ab Crunch - Ab Workout

The abdomen crunch is the most common and easiest ab exercise that you can do.  Simply lie on the floor with your back flat and your arms bent behing your head.  Then bend your legs and touch your knees to your elbows.

Modified way for beginners: Do the same thing, just lift your head up and put it between your knees each time rather than bringing your knees to your elbows!

2.  Reverse Ab Pose

Ab Workout - Beach bod

Lie on your back and put your arms in the shape of a T, with your legs lifted so they are perpendicular to the floor.  Move your hips a few inches to the left, exhale and drop both of your legs to the right… slowly! Make sure you stop before your legs hit the floor.  Hold your legs in the position above the floor for a deep breath, exhale and return back to where you started.  Repeat the exercise on both sides – alternate sides for 20 reps, doing 10 on each side

3.  Ab Vacuum

ab vacuum

Lie on on your back with your arms above your head, your feet on the floor, and your legs bent. Slowly lift your spine until your hips are high.  Exhale as you relax your abs and lower your spine down to the ground. As you do this, a natural vacuum will draw your belly in. When your hips are on the floor, lower hands to start position. Repeat 7 to 10 times.

4.  Ab Twist

ab twist

To do this one, you sit on the floor with your legs bent.  Lean your chest back and lift your feet off the ground about 6-9 inches balancing all your weight on your lower back and butt.  Then, holding a either a medicine ball or a weight and rotate your body to either side, letting the ball/weight almost touch the ground. Make sure you keep your abs tight the whole time! Do 2 to 3 sets of 15 reps on each side (30 total).

Modified way for beginners:  keep your feet on the floor, rather than lifting them 6-9 inches off the ground.  Everything else stays the same!

5.  Planks

Planks - 6 Pack Ab Exercises

Or was we used to call them in cheerleading, “elbows and toes”! Get into a push up position and then lower your arms so your forearms are resting on the ground, balancing your body weight along with your toes.  Do 2-3 sets, holing the plank for 1 one minute.

6. Leg Lifts with an Exercise Ball

Leg Lifts with Exercise Ball - 6 Pack Abs

Lie on the floor, flat on your back.  Start with the ball in your hands, with your arms extended above your head. Put the ball between your feet, squeezing them together to keep the ball in place, and lower both of your arms and legs down towards the floor. Make sure you only go down as far as you can without arching or straining your back. Then, bring them both back up and grab the ball with your hands.  Lower your arms and legs back down to the floor and start again! Do 2-3 sets of 15-25 reps.

Modified way for beginners:  try doing the same exercise without the ball! (Just touch your finger tips to your toes when you raise your arms and legs!)

With these 6 exercises, regular cardio, and healthy eating, you’re sure to have that six-pack back before you know it! Good luck! :)

My Baking Obsession…

I Have Been Told A Time Or Two That It Is An Obsession, But I Like To Call Baking More Of My Hobby…

(We All Know Fashion Is My True Obsession!)

Birthday Cake Round 1

Every year my sister and I make each other a birthday cake.  Two years ago on her birthday I decided that I was going to make a really cool and special cake… so I decided that I was going to do this by decorating my regular white boxed cake with fondant.  This was the first cake that I ever decorated.  I used a boxed cake mix white cake, made homemade buttercream frosting, and bought packaged, pre-made vanilla fondant from Michael’s.

Birthday Cake Round 2

So then, this year takes had been set high and everyone would be expecting an even better cake! With these expectations from everyone who would be eating this cake, along with myself, I went in head first and made a three layer cake from scratch.  Two layers were white cake that was absolutely to die for, and the middle layer was the best chocolate cake I have ever had!  I also used the same recipe for homemade buttercream icing as the year before, and rather than buying the fondant, I made homemade marshmallow fondant… and if I do say so myself, this cake was absolutely AMAZING!

Here are some other cakes that I have made since my first ever attempt at decorating a cake in November 2011:

Cake For Sarah's Friend's Baby Shower

My sister’s college roommate threw a baby shower for her best friend and paid me $50 to make this cake for her… it was my first (and only to date) cake that someone paid me for!

Mama's Birthday Cake 1

Mama Birthday Cake 2

This was my mom’s birthday cake last year! We may have a slight obsession with lady buys in our family…

Sissy's Graduation Cake

This was one of two cakes I made for my sister’s graduation from graduate school last May! (The other was for her party, it was huge with a graduation cap made of fondant on the top of the cake along with the words “Congrats Fab 5” – she and her friends called themselves the fab 5!)

Year 2 Sissy's Birthday Cake #2

This year we had two birthday celebrations for my sister, so for the second cake I decided to try decorating the cake with just icing rather than fondant!

Daddy's Birthday Cake

This was my daddy’s birthday cake this year! I made it out of all icing just like I did with one of my sister’s birthday cakes this year!

If you can’t tell, I might have a slight obsession with baking… Don’t you worry! There are more of my sugary delights to come! :)

How To Look Hot All Day And All Night

Beat The Heat In These Stylish And Refreshing Outfits That Look Good From Day To Night

As August is quickly approaching, we all know the scorching hot days we are already experiencing are only going to get worse.  While there are many styles that are extremely cute and flattering on almost everyone, such as the maxi dress and skirt, they are not always the best for keeping us cool… And let’s be honest, I know I cannot stand to be wearing clothes that make me hotter than necessary on the already excruciatingly hot days.  Not only is it super difficult to find outfits that keep you cooled off while maintaining your usual trendy look, but having to change into an outfit to go out in after spending a long day out in the heat, can sometimes be worse! How can this be solved you might ask? Well, here are just a few suggestions that can be worn all day long, day to night, and still have the normal, appropriate look for whatever time of day it is and whatever you are doing!

High Waisted Shorts – Necessary Clothing $24.99

High Waisted Shorts - Necessary Clothing

Daytime:  Pair these awesome shorts with a blouse or nice top and a pair of flats or dressy sandals and you have the perfect outfit for a relaxing and comfortable day at the office!

After The Sun Sets:  Swap out that blouse for either a more casual tank or a crop top and change out of your flats and into a pair of nude or cream colored wedges and you will have a sexy outfit for your nighttime extravaganzas!

Crochet Bathing Suit – 6 Shore Road $138

Black Crochet Bathing Suit - 6 Shore Road

Daytime:  Wear this super sexy suit for a day on the beach with friends or when you’re just laying out, catching some rays at the pool.  Where ever you are, you are sure to turn the heads of everyone around with this chic little number on.

After The Sun Sets:  Be sure to pack a maxi skirt, a pair of jeans, or some high wasted shorts in your beach bag to throw on over your suit for your evening activities.  Not only is this piece an extremely flattering bathing suit, but it is also a stunning top.  Add a pair of heels or wedges and you will surely be turning everyone’s head!

White Jeans –Tory Burch (Nordstrom) $185

White Jeans - Tory Burch At Nordstrom

Daytime:  Pair these super cute white jeans with a bright colored tank top (pastels look awesome, too!)  and a pair of flats or sandals for the perfect daytime outfit.  Cuff the bottom of the already cropped pants to make them a little shorter – it adds to the overall look and keeps you feeling a little cooler!

After The Sun Sets:  For your nighttime adventures, uncuff the pants and add a pair of wedges or heels with a darker color (navy or black are always a good option) tank top or crop top.  Add a bright colored chunky statement necklace for a night pop of color and you are sure to be ready for whatever comes your way that evening!

Crop Top – American Apparel $38

Crop Top - American Apparel

Daytime:  Pair this crop top with a pair of white shorts and a pair of comfy sandals or flip flops along with a long necklace, a watch and a cute pair of earrings and you will be set for the sunshine!

After The Sun Sets: In the evening, switch out of your shorts and put on white jeans or regular blue denim jeans with a pair of cute wedges and some bigger accent pieces of jewelry and you’ll be the focal point of the night.

Trousers (aka “Pajama Style Bottoms”) – Zara $59.90

Trousers/Pajama Style Bottoms - Zara  Daytime: Add a nice blouse or tank top along with a blazer and a pair of flats to these super cute trousers and you have an appropriate, comfortable, and super hot outfit for a summer day at work.

After The Sun Sets: Ditch the blazer, keep the tank top, and switch out the flats for either a pair of sexy heels or super cute wedges and you’re all ready for a round of drinks at happy hour after a long day in the office.

As you can see, the options for day to night summer outfits really are endless.  This is not even close to an all inclusive list, rather more of a starting point to get you headed in the right direction! I hope this is helpful to you in planning your outfits for the rest of the summer, and if you need and help or have any questions or comments please just let me know! :)
