New Year, New Kristen: Changes To Come In 2015

New Year, New Kristen - Starting 2015 Off With A Change

Hello there, beauties… I’m back! After what seems like it has been forever (sorry lovelies, I had a few, uhh, distractions on my plate… But we’ll get into those a little later!), I am back and I am here to stay this time – I promise! (I know that may seem like an empty promise seeing as I know my last few posts (ever since graduation) have said the same thing, but this time I will prove it to you (trust me, I just had to pay the bill to keep the site up for another year, so I’ll be here!).

So, you may be wondering what this whole “New Year, New Kristen” nonsense is all about, and that is what I am going to explain to you now. So, the past year brought a lot of changes in my life. Finishing my last semester and then graduating from college, having no job for the first few months after graduation, starting and ending (well at least I think it has ended…) my quarter life crisis, getting my first “big girl” job (and having to go to work everyday…), buying my first car, having to pay my own bills (let me tell ya, it sucks!), and having to function as an adult. At least in my life, one that has stayed pretty much constant and the same for the past 22 years (with the exception of going to college and all of those smaller, big changes), this was a lot for me to handle. I know everyone has trouble adjusting to change and everyone deals with it differently, but one thing that I do to express my emotions and feelings, is write (duh, Kristen… that’s why you have a blog), so while usually my more emotional and “deep” writing is limited to my own journal, that is one thing I plan on changing this year. Well, at least changing a little bit. I don’t this to turn into my published and public diary, but what I mean is that I plan on branching out of my typical fashion and beauty posts that I usually stick to. In a sense, I plan on writing about things that are more personal and timely in my life in addition to these topics. Basically, my goal with this is to make Style by Kristen Blair into a hybrid of some sort,. Ideally, I would like it to turn into a combination of what it has been so far (so the usual fashion/beauty posts) but also add in posts that are similar to those found on Thought Catalog and Elite Daily (both of which I absolutely love! Hey, we all have guilty pleasures, right?!).

With that, many of you may be a little apprehensive as to how this will work and how it will all tie together and pull into one site that flows and follows a theme. To you my answer is stay tuned. I am not sure how I will go about this yet, but it is something I am working on and figuring out as we speak! So, to all of you lovely ladies (and gentlemen) who have stuck by me – even in my absence – I need to say thank you; but also, I need to ask a favor of you. I know I may not be in the best position to be asking favors of any of you seeing as I am the one who owes the favors here; but, I would like to ask you to stick with me for a little longer while I figure this whole transformation out! It may take a little while for me to work out the kinks and growing pains, but I really believe that this will help me grow not only as a writer (I really do need to branch out and write other things other than OOTD posts and trends for the upcoming season!), but also as a person. I truly feel that this will help me find myself and grow to become less of a closed off person when it comes to my emotions (okay, Kris, enough of the sappy talk…). But, with that, I am done with the sob story and I am ready to get rolling with all the exciting things I have planned for y’all coming in the next few days and weeks!

Bring It On 2015 - New Year, New Kristen

So what do you say, gorgeous? Stay tuned and I promise not to let you down!

OOTD: Trendy Tuesday

Let’s Go Nationals!

Good morning and happy Tuesday beauties! As I’m sure you all know, last week started the MLB Playoffs, and this year much to many peoples’ surprise and even more peoples’ excitement, the Nationals made it! While I have to admit I have never been a die hard baseball fan, I do love going to the games and (as I’m sure you can imagine) especially the playoff games! So, we know the Nationals had a bit of a rough start last week, losing the first two of their five game series against the San Francisco Giants, but last night they finally pulled it together and won 4-1! Wahoo! I am really hoping and preying that they can just keep it going until this weekend so Hilary and I can go to yet another game!

But, now hat I am done rambling about what I am hoping to do this weekend… This week’s Trendy Tuesday is a chic and stylish outfit that is perfect for a fall baseball game! I t may not be the most fashionista approved ensemble, but I cannot stand when girls look like they’re going to a college football game in their sundresses and heels! This is a baseball game, ladies… this is not a fashion show… (and trust me, there are VERY few times in life I will ever say that!) So, without further ado, here is this week’s Trendy Tuesday… Nationals style!

Outfit Of The Day - Trendy Tuesday Washington Nationals Style

Tops: Nationals T-Shirt, $35; J.Crew Chambray, $78 $66 – On Sale Now!; Pants: Only, $50; Boots: Tory Burch, $495; Watch: Michael Kors, $225; Hat: MLB, $19.

Is that not the perfect game day outfit or what?! Well, I know that I am loving it, and (fingers crossed!) I will be wearing it to the game this weekend if the Nats can keep it together for two more games and continue on in the tournament! So, if you are going to be there, let me know! I’d love to see ya and your beautifully shining face! :) I hope y’all have an amazing Tuesday, and enjoy the weather! It is going to be gorgeous again today!

Words Of Wisdom On This Workout Wednesday

Get up, get dressed, and get your skinny butt moving!

Workout Wednesday - Quote Of The Day/QOTD

Do you absolutely love the way you look? Are you 100% satisfied with what you see when you look in the mirror everyday? While I sincerely wish your honest answer to these questions was “yes”, I have a pretty good feeling that is not the case… However, if you answered these questions “no”, ask yourself this: “Am I doing everything I can to get myself to that point?” If your answer to this question is “yes” then you can just stop reading now (good for your girlfriend, keep it up… We all need you as inspiration!). However, if you answered that questions with “no”, this is the time to reevaluate some things and get together a plan and a routine in order to be able to answer all of the above questions with a confident “yes!”.

As a society, the ladies of today have increasingly unrealistic expectations as to what we “should” look like or what the “ideal” image is. I will be the first one to admit that no matter what I look like, I will probably never be 100% satisfied with what I see when I look in the mirror.  I know that is probably not what I am supposed to say, but it is the truth for me and a majority of the other girls out there.  But, society’s expectations of what we should look like is not what we should be looking at or listening to at all… Rather, we should be looking at what we do to look the way we do and how much progress we have made from where we started.  If you are doing as much as you possibly can to get your ideal body and image, then you should love the way you look.  If you go to the gym regularly and eat a healthy diet, basically you’re living the healthiest life you possibly can, then you are doing your absolute best and you should reward yourself for that rather than beating yourself up for the things you still don’t like about your appearance.

Many of my friends and family may say that this is extremely hypocritical coming from me… For as long as I can remember there has always been something about my appearance that I wanted to change or improve. I usually workout a minimum of five days a week and make every effort to do some type of exercise everyday (sometimes it just doesn’t happen!), and I make every effort to eat as healthy as I can possibly imagine (my latest change has been eating gluten free), yet I still am not completely satisfied with my appearance. Why not? Well this is partially personal (insecurities) and also partially due to the environment I am surrounded by.  With my love of fashion comes the obsession with fashion magazines, and with the obsession of fashion magazines comes the pages and pages of ads showing photoshopped, edited, and airbrushed models who are unrealistically and unhealthily thin.

So what can be done about this problem that way more girls than just me are facing everyday? Well, as far as personal insecurities, we just have to really try and accept and grow to love the way we look.  It is not going to be an easy task at all, but it is one that is worth the time that you will have to put in.  And, while I am never going to give up my monthly mags and I have a strange feeling that the editors of fashion magazines aren’t going to start using real women who portray the image of what real women look like, I am just going to have to accept the fact that I will never look like the stick thin models, nor will almost any other healthy woman in the world. So for now, make sure you are doing everything in your power to obtain the image you want. Go to the gym everyday, go outside and run, or do an at-home workout from the comfort of your living room! Whatever you do, just make sure you’re exercising and leading a healthy lifestyle, there’s nothing more you can do… So love yourself, you deserve it!

OOTD: Workout Wednesday

Hello there beauties! I hope you are all having a fantastic Wednesday so far, and that you’re as excited about Workout Wednesday as I am! So, with the weather getting to be typical September cold one day, super hot the next, Northern Virginia weather, this may be our last summertime Workout Wednesday outfit, but who knows… It may not! Anyway, getting back on track, I am personally a huge fan of fun workout tank tops… They are one of my favorite things ever, and if I could wear them everywhere I probably would (okay, maybe not everywhere, but you know what I mean!).  Even more, I especially love workout tank tops with fun quotes! There are some super sassy ones out there, and I just love them all! If that isn’t motivation for you when you look at yourself in the mirror at the gym and staring back is a fun, sassy quote telling you how awesome you are or to workout harder, then I don’t know what is! So, in the spirit of the fun tanks, I bring you this week’s Workout Wednesday

Outfit Of The Day - Workout Wednesday

Tank: Etsy, $29; Sports Bra: Nike, $43; Shorts: Nike, $28; Shoes: Nike, $$80

If you hadn’t ever noticed, and you couldn’t tell from this outfit, I am definitely partial to Nike products.  I am also a huge fan and supporter of Under Armour, but for some reason Nike just tops the list for me.  Nike running shoes are the only ones I will buy. This is because I have always had such a great experience with them and they never hurt my feet (I have had a lot of problems with shoes hurting my feet or rubbing when I run… Talk about awful!), so I know what I like and I stick to it… That just happens to be Nike (I would say my favorite is Lululemon, but it’s a little out of my price range at this point in time…. This girl doesn’t have a job at the moment!) But, now off my soapbox about Nike and back to Workout Wednesday

This outfit is so fun with it’s pop of color and the fun quote on the tank! I don’t know about you ladies, but it really makes me want to go change and hit the gym! Do you have a favorite brand for workout clothes other than Nike? What is your favorite type of outfit to wear when you hit the gym or venture into the great outdoors for your daily exercise?

Motivational Monday: Dr. Seuss Always Says It Best…

Hello and happy Monday beauties! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend and you’re ready to take on this week! My best friend (and roommate from school) Michele came to visit this weekend and we had a blast! We went out on Saturday night with my very best friend from high school, Hilary, our good friend Samantha, and some other friends and it was great! Michele recently got a big fancy job in New York City working at VH1 Classic where she is scheduling promotions. I am so happy for her (that’s pretty much her dream job! Well, it will get her to her dream job…) but that means that it is harder for us to get together and visit, so it was really great to get to see her and spend time with her this weekend! Here are a few photos from our night out in Arlington!

A little Snapchat action that we just had to save! Bottom Row: me (left), Hilary (right). Top Row: Samantha (left), Michele (right).

So glad I got to see this gem this weekend! (Me and Michele)

But, now that I have just blabbed about my weekend… Back to Motivational Monday! So, this week I have a few words that I found to be really meaningful. I have heard this quote about a thousand times probably, but when I saw it last night it meant something a little different to me.  I always just saw it for what it was, knew it was meaningful and was a powerful quote, but I never really looked deeper than the surface or saw beyond the words.

Motivational Monday - Quote About Memories

With all of the change I have had in the past few months – graduating from college, moving back home, looking for a job, etc. – this quote really hit close to home for me.  Sometimes when we are in the middle of doing one-hundred things, we forget to step back and really appreciate the moment or the thing(s) that we are doing.  I know that personally, this happened to me when I was in college.  I never thought four years could fly by so fast, but it seems like I went to bed as a freshman and woke up the next day at graduation. It flew by, so my advice to anyone who is in college now or will be in college in the future? Enjoy it.  Every single minute of it.  The long nights spent studying or doing homework in the library, going out on a Tuesday night just because you can, staying in on a Friday night with your closest girlfriends and watching movies and eating your weight in pizza and ice cream, going to frat parties and maybe drinking a little more than you should have, even pulling all-nighters to finish that paper that you’ve had all semester but put off until the last minute despite saying you weren’t going to do that this time.  It’s the small things that you will look back on and think that they were the best days or nights that you can remember. Like staying in sometimes and just having a well needed girls night. My roommate Kasey and I had our fair share of these our senior year (maybe a little more than normal…), but those are the nights that I laughed harder than I ever have in my life and made some of the best memories of my entire college career.  Or Sunday nights doing homework with my roommate Michele, getting distracted by every little thing and ending up taking videos of her acting like Harry Potter (I will never get rid of those videos and every time I watch them or even think about them really, I laugh just as hard as I did the day it happened.) My point is, at the time we felt like we were just being boring and staying in because it was freezing or raining outside, or like I was just doing homework that I really didn’t want to do but needed to get out of the way, but in reality they were some of the best moments I’ve ever had. However, because I didn’t realize how much those memories would mean to me after graduation, I didn’t really cherish them as much as I think I should have.

What I am trying to say is to make sure you appreciate every moment you have with your friends and family, because you never know what it will mean to you in the future.  Don’t wake up one day and regret taking so many things for granted.  You only get to do all of these things (no matter what they may be) once, and you can’t go back and change things.  That being said, don’t ever beat yourself up about decisions you’ve made or things you’ve done that you may be embarrassed about. Like I said, you cannot change the things that have happened in the past, so if it is something you may not be the most proud of, learn from that and don’t make the same decision twice… Use it as a learning experience and move on!

I hope you enjoyed my little nugget of wisdom on this wonderful Monday! I hope I wasn’t too naggy, and I hope it didn’t come across as a lecture (I realize now that it may have…).  So, until tomorrow… Have a wonderful Monday, lovelies!

Fix Me Up Friday: An Easy Fix For The Worst Sunburns

Hello and happy Friday gorgeous! I hope you have all had a wonderful week and you’re ready for the weekend (I know I sure am…)! Well, this week I have a cure for the worst sunburns you could possibly imagine.  I actually did this earlier in the summer and have been meaning to tell y’all about it for some time now, but I guess it must have slipped my mind when I was MIA for a little… (sorry about that guys!). But anyway, here it is:

  • Rub the burnt area with a wet washcloth so the skin is damp (not dripping, but visibly wet).
  • Generously pour apple cider vinegar on the affected area, and let it set in as much as possible.
  • After the vinegar has set in and dried a little, apply a good amount of coconut oil to the area and let it set in.

Memorial day weekend of this summer I got extremely sunburnt on my back. As we all know, I am working at a pool for the summer, and although I was wearing sunscreen, I guess my pasty skin still got scorched.  When I got home on Saturday, my mom (being the amazing mother that she is) decided to take matters into her own hands and Google “home remedies” for curing sunburn.  Well, after searching for a little while this is what she finally came up with, and let me tell ya… It worked like a charm! She did this regimen to my back and I went to bed and when I woke up the next morning, not only was the red a lot better (I didn’t say she was a miracle worker… It was still a little pink, but nothing like the tomato it was the day before!) but the pain was also completely gone.  I was shocked and so were my mom and all of the lifeguards I work with at the pool.  So, if you or anyone you know has or is prone to sunburn, get your skinny butt to the store and pick up some vinegar and coconut oil because let me tell you this stuff really works!

Have you tried anything else that works like a charm? Please let us know! I hope you all have a fantastic Friday and an even better weekend! Until next time, ladies…

Some Words Of Wisdom This Motivational Monday…

Good morning and happy Monday gorgeous! I hope you all had an amazing weekend and you enjoyed the beyond scorching weather! I had to work for part of the weekend and I thought my skin might be melting off at some points… But, the good news is that this week is supposed to cool down a little and be beautiful outside! Finally. But, getting back to business… Today we have an amazing quote of the day to bring you a little motivation and inspiration on this Monday morning. I also added a little personal story for ya on what this quote means to me. I got a little sappy and emotional this morning guys, so beware! So, I’m really sorry in advance…

QOTD - Motivational Monday (7.28.2014)

One thing that I have been struggling with lately is worrying too much about what I am not doing and what I could be doing, rather than just enjoying what I am currently doing.  I may not have my dream job at this point in time and I may not be exactly where I envisioned, but this is still my life.  Right after graduation I went through a period of time when I was very sad and upset about the fact that I was going to be a lifeguard with a college degree… I didn’t have a “real” job (or what I thought I should have) and I didn’t have a boyfriend like a lot of my friends and my big sister did and it really got to me.

I was actively looking and applying for every job I could possibly find, but still I had “nothing”.  However, after the pool finally opened and I started working more often and having the ability to do fun things with my best friends from high school, being able to go to the gym in the middle of the day when it was empty, and probably the best part of all, getting to lay at the pool all day and get paid for it, I realized that I needed to appreciate the things that I did have more than the things I felt I should have.  I am so lucky to be able to have a part time job and live at home with my parents while I look for a job. I know there are a lot of people out there who do not have that option available to them, and for that I am so grateful to my parents.  I also realized that this is probably the last time for the rest of my life (until I retire, of course…) that I will be able to not have a full-time job and to do all of the fun things I have been able to do.  So, basically what I have taken away from this, is that (for now) I need to live in the moment and enjoy this time that I have. I need to appreciate the fact that I can go out on a Monday or Tuesday night if I want to and I need to take advantage of it. And I need to do everything I can to help out and spend as much time with my family and friends as I can, because I won’t have as much spare time when I have a “real” job.

The most surprising part of this “funk” I went through was the fact that I was dwelling on not having a boyfriend in my life.  That is something that I have never worried about or used to define me.  I am a firm believer that if you spend all your time waiting around and looking for the right person, you will not find them.  I have also always been extremely comfortable and okay with doing my own thing.  I don’t need a boyfriend and for a long time I didn’t really want one.  However, I think the fact that I was graduating and coming home where my best friend had a serious boyfriend of a few years, and my sister (who had previously been single, and been the one who always went out with me and did everything with me) now had a serious boyfriend, got me thinking that maybe something was wrong with me.  Everyone around me was in a relationship and that just made me feel like I needed to be also. However, my best friend had been in a relationship for the past four years, so this was nothing new. We still do a lot of things together and sometimes her boyfriend would come with us. I was (and am) extremely happy for my sister, but the fact that we wouldn’t be spending as much time together or be doing things like we used to really upset me and made me feel like I was losing her.  I still have a sister, it is just different now.  As you grow up things change, and I realized that this was just the beginning of so many of the changes that were to come.

So, basically, what I am trying to convey to you lovelies, is that just because you may not be exactly where you feel you should be or where everyone else is, doesn’t mean that you’re a failure.  You are not any better or worse off than anyone else, you are simply in a different place than others.  Don’t worry about what tomorrow will bring or what the future holds, just focus on today and make it the best day it can possibly be.  Don’t ever let being in a relationship define your self worth or make you feel like you aren’t good enough.  Everything will happen when it is meant to happen, and until then just enjoy your life the way it is and make the most of everyday!

Fix Me Up Friday: Four Game-Changing Ways To Incorporate Lemons Into Your Skincare Regimen

Fix Me Up Friday - Skincare Uses For Lemons

Recently, while browsing through Pinterest mindlessly as I do all to often, I came across a ton of different uses for lemon… For the face! I never realized how many ways lemons and lemon juice could be used, and I definitely didn’t realize how many different amazing things you could use them for in your daily skincare regimen! But, much to my surprise they happen to be one of the most amazing fruits for your skin, and the best part is, they’re probably a lot less expensive than the products you’re currently using! So, here is some of what I found during my Pinterest binge…

Fix ME Up Friday - Skincare Uses For Lemons

Blackhead Treatment

Who knew?! If you take a half of a lemon and put three or four drops of honey on top, then all you have to do is rub the lemon/honey mixture on your face (emphasizing your biggest problem areas), let it sit for five minutes, and rinse with cold water.  It is said to work immediately… This is something I am definitely going to have to try for myself. Blackheads are something that I always seem to be battling, and being one of my biggest pet peeves and annoyances as far as skincare, if this works like Pinterest claims it does, it will be a serious game changer!

Fix Me Up Friday - Skincare Uses For Lemons

Facial Hair Removal

Combine one tablespoon of honey, one-half of a tablespoon of ground oatmeal, and a few drops of lemon juice and what do you get?! A natural face mask that works to get rid of facial hair! All you have to do is follow these simple steps, and it is said to work like a charm!

  • Combine ingredients (listed above)
  • Apply the mixture to your entire face just like you would use a face mask.
  • Let the mask sit for about 15 minutes, and then rinse your face with water.

It sounds super easy and all you have to do is repeat this remedy two to three times a week for three to four weeks, and allegedly it will help eliminate facial hair! How amazing would that be?! I am not sure if your facial hair will come back or not after the treatment is complete, however this is definitely something I would be willing to try (especially if it is gone for  good!).

Fix Me Up Friday - Skincare Uses For Lemons

Brightening Toner

By combining lemon juice, water, and witch hazel (which you can buy at pretty much any local drugstore) in a plastic bottle, you come out with an amazing toner that will brighten your skin and even reduce the size of your pores! Does that sound amazing or what?! Do you struggle with oily skin and fear that this may not get the job done for your tricky skin? No need to worry, just add two tablespoons of alcohol and you should be good to go!

Like I said before, I found this remedy on Pinterest (full recipe can be found here!), but it was originally posted on Shwin & Shwin (this was the first time I ever read their blog, but let me tell you… It is amazing! They have so many different natural, DIY skincare remedies and so much more… you should definitely check them out if you have not yet done so, I highly recommend it!). If you are interested in learning more about this DIY product or want the full recipe to make your own, you can get all the deets on their blog here. This is definitely something I am going to be making this weekend… They raved about how well it worked and I figure it’s worth a try.

Fix Me Up Friday - Skincare Uses For Lemons

Anti-Aging

By mixing Lemon Juice, Green Tea, and Turmeric Powder together your end result will be an amazing face-mask that is the answer to all of your anti-aging troubles (get the full recipe here!). The lemon works to boost collagen production and boosts the elasticity of the skin and cleanse deep into pores (among so many other amazing things!), the antioxidants in the green tea fills your skin with so many vitamins and minerals which help fight fine lines and wrinkles, treat acne, is a UV protectant, and is even said to help fight skin cancer! And last but not least, the turmeric powder helps fight irritation and inflammation, it also has medicinal properties that help fight acne and eczema, and finally it helps fight and reverse skin spots, acne scars, and freckles. Does that sound amazing or what!? Well, the website that I found this recipe on is equally amazing… They have all the uses and properties of all three items listed in depth (check it out!) as well as the full recipe for the mask and so much more throughout their site… I highly recommend checking it out for yourself, you won’t be sorry you did!

There you have it ladies and gents… Lemon is an amazing fruit and provides so many great benefits for the skin! Who knew? Well, maybe a lot of you did, but due to a little ignorance on my part, this was all new to me and I was taken by surprise! But let me tell you, it was quite an amazing surprise to learn how much something as simple as lemon can do for my face. I am definitely going to be trying all of these ASAP, so I will let you know how my experiments go!

I hope you all have a fantastic Friday and if you don’t have big plans tonight (or at any point this weekend or in the near future), try out one of these recipes and let me know how it goes! I would love to hear from you beauties. Or, if you have already tried one of these (and loved or hated it), let me know that also. I love hearing from y’all so please, don’t be shy!
