Introducing… Our First Ever Fix Me Up Friday!

Do You Know The Shelf Life Of All Of Your Fav. Make-Up Products? Let’s Talk About It…

Good morning and happy Friday lovelies! I hope you are all as excited about our new theme for Fridays, because I have some awesome posts coming your way in the coming weeks! For our first ever Fix Me Up Friday, we need to address a very important issue… The shelf life of make-up products.  Do you ever throw away unused make-up? No, of course not, right? Well actually, wrong! I know, I know, this sounds absolutely crazy especially given the amount of money we spend on such products. Not only are these products no longer going to be as effective and work as well, but, it can actually be harmful to your face and skin if you are using these products for too long after they should have been tossed!

The eye area is the most sensitive and also the easiest to become infected with using make-up that is old and “contaminated”.  Infections such as styes and conjunctivitis are just two of the possible effects that can be produced from old products.  Second to the eyes, is your skin.  The skin on your face is extremely soft and sensitive, and therefore should only be treated with the best products.  Using foundation, concealer, BB cream, and powder that is past it’s recommended shelf life can cause infections on the skin including impetigo, and not to mention breakouts with painful pimples, blemishes, and blackheads.  Ew, now who wants those, right?! Well the good news is, by sticking to these easy to follow guidelines, you can avoid all of these nasty side effects of nasty, old make-up!

I know some of these time frames may seem a little short, and you’re probably thinking that it takes you a lot longer than six months to go through your entire pot of eye-liner, but I’m telling you ladies, it is really important to follow these guidelines… One day you may thank me! However, if you’re anything like me and you’re on a bit of a [tight] budget, throwing away your perfectly good, outrageously expensive make-up products may seem like the craziest idea you’ve heard since the weather channel forecasted more snow for next week (yup, I’m not kidding… Next Tuesday is calling for more darn snow!), so there are some ways to extend the life of your products a little.  One way is to store your make-up in a cool, dry place (like the refrigerator!).  Because most of your products (mascara, liquid eye-liner and foundation, etc.) are either water or oil based, they tend to draw in a lot of bacteria which then multiplies.  But, if it is being store in a cold and dry place, it is harder for these bacteria to fester and grow.  Another way to extend the life of your mascara is to avoid “pumping” the brush in and out before using it.  I can promise you that you’re not getting any more mascara on that brush than it would have had before, but what you are doing is adding more air into the bottle, which causes bacteria to get in and also encourages the growth of mold and other nasty things we don’t want anywhere near our eyes!

In no world am I trying to scare you though, ladies! To be completely honest, when I was doing my research on these shelf-lives and the harmful effects that can occur when you don’t follow these guidelines, I considered never wearing make-up again (for about 2.5 seconds, but then I thought I would do the human race a favor, and continue on with the application of my face everyday… Don’t want to scare the children now, do I!?). All of these serious conditions that can be caused by such a simple thing as covering up a nasty pimple or putting on a simple coat of mascara (to, as my roommate [Kasey] would say, let the world know she is a human and has eye lashes) are really scary and I would never have thought of such a thing had I not come across about 1,937 pictures on Pinterest (follow me by clicking here!) and decided to look into these so called “shelf-lives”.  It was only then that I came across a ton of extremely useful information about the dangers I have been exposed to since I started wearing make-up.  So, do yourself a favor, on your way home tonight, stop at Sephora (or at the mall) and pick up a replacement mascara and everything you may have had in your make-up bag since 7th grade, and toss the old ones! Even if they aren’t gone, if they are that old (or anywhere close to it!) it is time to pitch it and treat yourself to a fresh one.

I hope y’all enjoyed our first Fix Me Up Friday, and hopefully you learned a little something! Do you have an idea for next week’s post (or an upcoming week… I have a few ideas myself, also!)? Don’t keep it in, either leave a comment or email me at kristen.booth06 [at] gmail [dot] com with any ideas, suggestions, comments, or concerns you have about this post or any of the others! I love hearing from you all, so please don’t be shy!

I hope you all have a fabulous Friday evening (and night!) and a wonderful weekend! It is going to be absolutely beautiful, so get outside and do something fun!
