OOTD: Wallet Friendly Friday

Happy Friday Everyone! The Weekend Is Almost Here!

Good morning! I can honestly say that I have not been so excited for Friday in a long time! This week was my midterms week, and let me tell you… it was NOT fun! But, it is finally over, the weekend is here, and I am ready to have some fun and catch up on relaxation and sleep! Today’s Outfit of the Day is a budget savvy ensemble (duh Kristen… it’s Friday!) that really is perfect for so many occasions! It is the perfect outfit for a day in the office or even for a dinner date or dinner party! No matter what your weekend may have in store, you can probably find something to wear this super awesome outfit for!

Outfit Of The Day - Wallet Friendly Friday

Top: H&M Chiffon Blouse – hm.com, $25

Skirt:  Monki Louise Skirt – monki.com, $47

Shoes:  Just Fab Iva Heels (Black) – heels.com, $55

Bag: H&M Handbag – hm.com, $20

Bracelets:  Juicy Couture Narrow Pyramid USB Bracelet – juicycouture.com$38 $20

Abro Bracelet – zalando.co.uk, $35

Watch: Designer Enamel Black Bangle Watch – debenhams.com$72 $64

Earrings:  Kenneth Cole NY Hematite Tone Faceted Stone Drop Earrings – macys.com, $24

Nails:  OPI Lincoln Park After Dark – ulta.com, $9

OPI Bubble Bath – ulta.com, $9

Beauty Tip:

Whether you like your nails to make a statement or not, you should always have nail polish on them, ladies! Even if you do not like to draw attention to them, use a neutral, clean color like Bubble Bath made by OPI (or, if you’re an Essie fan, I also love Mademoiselle!) However, if you’re trying to make a statement with your nails, my all time favorite, and go-to fall color is Lincoln Park After Dark (also by OPI).

One of my biggest pet peeves is when women walk around with chipped nail polish.. its gross ladies, please do not do it! I am telling you, it really does say more about you than you would think!

Anyway, now that I have gotten my daily rant out of the way, with that being said I hope you all have a fantastic weekend and do a lot of fun (or, if you had a week like mine, relaxation).  Even if you are on a tight budget, you can do a little shopping and pick up something along these lines for Motivational Monday to look your best and start your week out on the right foot next week!

XOXO, Kristen

Its A Never Ending Cycle… Keep Your “Old” Clothes!

Seasonal Trends: A Never-Ending, Rotating Cycle…

“What’s trending this season?” and “What are the hottest looks these days?”

Those seem to be the questions we ask ourselves every few months as the seasons change and we get a new set of trends and styles that are “in” at that point in time.  When we are in the moment, many of us think these styles are completely new ideas that no one has ever thought of making or wearing before.  I find myself doing it more often than I would like to admit… But, if you look into the past, you will find that a vast majority (if not all) of the trending styles we are wearing today, are really just recycled trends from previous decades.  For example, take a look at some of the largest trends that I found for this season:

High Waisted Shorts/Pants

Returning Trend - High Waisted Shorts

Topshop Embellished High Waist Shorts, Nordstrom, $90

High-waisted pants and shorts are a huge thing this season! Everywhere I turn I feel like I see at least one person wearing these super cute and stylish bottoms.  An extremely popular style this season, but was it the first time we’ve seen this one? Not at all!  High-waisted shorts were an enormous trend in the 1970’s first!

Big, Chunky, Statement Jewelry

Repeating Trends - Chunky, Bold Jewelry

ABS by Allen Schwartz Jewelry Glass Bib Necklace, Saks Fifth Avenue, $250

Statement jewelry… Everyone has it, talks about, plans their outfit around it, etc.  It seems to be consuming our lives, and I cannot say I hate it!  I absolutely love the return of the big, bold, colorful jewelry.  Paired with a bright colored top, we have a massive trend from the 1980’s that has made a comeback.

Leggings

Repeating Trend - Leggings

High Waist Aztec Print Leggings, Etsy, $25

One of my all time favorite trends to make it back into style… Leggings are another blast from the past that seems to be everywhere.  Returning after being ever popular in the 1990’s, there are so many ways to wear them. Leggings are the most popular with oversized sweaters, sweatshirts, and t-shirts, and mini dresses and skirts.

However, we wouldn’t stop at just plain old black leggings, would we?  Not a chance! This season, leggings are making an even bigger statement and are now being worn in various neon and pastel colors in addition to fun prints.

Chunky/Thick Heel

Repeating Trends - Thick/Chunky Heel

MICHAEL Michael Kors Heaven Suede Platform Pump, Neiman Marcus, $150

And now for the shoes… My weakness! This season’s hot chunky heel is far from a new style… popular amongst the ladies of disco in the 1970’s and then making their way back into style in the 1990’s, the idea of a thicker heel is far from original.

 Denim

Repeating Trend - Denim

Starry ‘Bout That Sleeveless Shirt, LuLu’s, $41

While were on a roll with the 90’s, why not bring up the increasingly popular trend of denim.  Denim is all over the place this season.  From pants, to dresses, shirts, overalls, and jackets (just to name a few!), everywhere you turn there is denim on denim on denim!

As you can see, this season’s styles are far from new or original. So, if the past is any indication, next season’s probably won’t be either.  With that being said, why throw away, donate, recycle, or whatever you may choose to do with your “old” clothes, when you could just put them away in a safe place and pull them back out when they return again in a few years?!

Classy And Chic: Appropriate Outfits For The Office

Getting dressed for work… I think this is something we all struggle with from time-to-time (or, if you’re like me, every morning!). It can be really difficult to find something to wear that is both cute and fashionable, but is also appropriate to wear in a professional setting.  Working at Company Agenda, I could wear a lot of things that I probably wouldn’t be able to wear in most other offices. It was a really relaxed environment, and we could really wear whatever we wanted (well within reason… no club attire!) But, sometimes I felt like this made it harder to get dressed in the morning because there were no clear-cut rules or guidelines as to what we could and could not wear.

However, while I could wear anything I wanted, I know that is not reality for most other offices in New York City and just in general! However, being in the city and on the subway in the mornings during rush hour, I saw some sights that were in no way okay to wear to work, or really anywhere for that matter! So, I decided I would put together a list of the basic rules that should be followed when getting dressed for work in the morning!

Rule #1:  Make sure your outfit actually matches!

I know, I know… This sounds like common sense for most of us, but let me tell you, I have learned that for some people nothing is common sense when it comes to fashion!  When you are attempting to look professional, your outfit should always match, no exceptions.  While it can sometimes be considered fashionable to wear things that don’t exactly match or really go together, and sometimes it looks super cute! However, wear that on the weekend or at night… that is not appropriate work wear.

Mismatched Outfits Are Never A Good Idea...

Rule #2:  Tuck your shirt in!

Tucking Your Shirt In Completes Your Outfit And Looks Way More Professional

Sometimes there can be an exception to this one, but for the most part, your shirt should be tucked in!  If you are wearing a button up, there are very few times that it is appropriate to leave it un-tucked, but there are certain blouses that are okay not to tuck when wearing pants or a skirt.

Usually, when you are wearing a skirt your shirt should always be tucked in.  I always feel that it looks a little awkward to leave it un-tucked, especially if it is high waisted, but I will not rule it out completely. Just use your noggin when following this one!

Rule #3:  Your shoes count too!

Ladies, sneakers should be worn to the gym or to workout. That’s it.  Please do everyone a favor and don’t wear your gym shoes to work… Even if it is just on the train! You look silly and everyone notices!  However, that is definitely better than wearing them for the whole day, or wearing a pair of old, ratty heels that you got in college and used to wear out to the bars and frat parties back in the day! It looks trashy, and no matter how cute and nice the rest of your outfit is, it just ruins the whole thing!

Jimmy Choo Crumble Heels

Jimmy Choo Crumble black suede sandals with gold platform – $825.00

Rule #4: Hair…

I cannot tell you how many women I see on the subway with wet hair every morning. Come on girls… You are not a wet dog, so why walk around looking like one all day?! It does not take that long to pull out a blow dryer and style your hair before you leave.  I know that some people are blessed with beautiful hair and can just walk out with wet hair and it will dry looking nice, but it is not that difficult to simply flip your head upside down and dry it really quickly if you are one of them!

You're Not A Wet Dog - Style Your Hair

Also, there are tons of cute ways to put your hair up in either a bun or a ponytail. Why are you wearing your hair in a messy bun to work with your shift dress and designer pumps? I’m gonna tell you right now, it is not cute.  I know we all wake up late sometimes and may not have time to make your hair perfect like every other day, but there are plenty of ways to pull your hair back quickly and still look professional and put together!

A Classy And Professional Bun Is Much Better Looking

Rule #5:  Come on ladies… Get rid of the chipped nail polish!

One of my biggest pet peeves, regardless of where you are, is when women walk around with chipped nail polish… It drives me absolutely nuts! Not only is it tacky, but what does it say about the rest of your personal hygiene if you can’t even take the time out to rub the nail polish off your nails?!

Now that I have given my personal rant about chipped finger nail polish, let me also say that it is extremely unprofessional! When you are wearing a clean cut shift dress or a chic suit with that amazing pair of Jimmy Choo pumps and your favorite Prada bag, you look super professional, clean, and put together… You blow away anyone and everyone who sees you! But, then they get closer and see your hot pink or red nail polish that is chipped and only on 7 of your nails, and it kills the whole thing!  It doesn’t take that long… Just take of the nail polish!

Chipped Nail Polish Looks Tacky And Trashy... Keep Up With Your Nail Hygiene

Okay, so I know some of these little tips may seem a little harsh, and I am in no way trying to be mean, but there are certain things that everyone can do to make them selves look ten times better that take almost no time at all! Why wouldn’t you want to look your best if it was that simple?! I hope you ladies find this helpful and let me know if there are any other things that you have seen in New York City or wherever you may live! I always love being able to add additional rules and tips !

Dress To Impress: How To Look Professional, Classy, And Stylish For A Job Interview In The Fashion Industry

Dress The Part For Your Interview

No matter what industry you are pursuing, it is always of the utmost importance to look polished, professional, and put together.  However, while many interviews look for applicants to arrive dressed in a suit with a pair of closed-toe, three inch, black heels, the world of fashion is looking for something entirely different! The first step to landing that dream job, is looking the part.  If you believe that you look and feel like you belong, then your interviewer will be more likely to feel the same way.

Rule #1:  Research The Company

Do Research On The Company

I’m sure you all know that you obviously need to do your homework before you show up for your interview, but what you also need to do, is research the clothes and the style of the brand.  By looking at the current and past collections of the company, you will get a sense of the style and type of clothing they offer.  When choosing your outfit, you should then take into account the type of clothes they sell and try your best to fit with that look.  This will give your interviewer the sense that you are the right fit for the company and that you venerate the image that the line portrays.

Rule #2: Wear Their Clothes

Wear Their Clothes - Devil Wears Prada Closet

If you’re interviewing with a design house, try and wear something that is from their line if possible.  I know when you’re looking for a job money can sometimes be tight and the places you’re interviewing may not necessarily be affordable, but even if it is something small (the cheapest thing they sell!), it will really set you apart from others who have never worn the label, and it will allow you to be able to speak from personal experience when asked what you like about the brand.

Rule #3:  When In Doubt, Over-Dress

Undredressed vs. Overdressed For A Fashion Job Interview

When you’re going to an interview, it is always better to over-dress rather than under-dress.  You would much rather be the girl that they remember because of her impeccable outfit and her professional look, rather than the one they remember only because she looked ridiculous and inappropriate.  You want your potential boss/interviewer to be able to envision you in a position higher than the one you’re applying for, so make sure you don’t look like a bum!

 Rule #4:  Wear New Shoes

Wear New Shoes To Your Interview - Christian Louboutin

While you don’t have to go out and buy a pair of brand new, $1,000 Louboutin heels (although, it could never hurt!), you should make sure the shoes that you wear are either new or appear to be new.  You never want to show up in a pair of shoes that look like they are old and ragged.  The nicer and cleaner your shoes appear, the more put together your whole look will seem.

Rule #5:  Always Steer Towards The Conservative Side

Dress Conservatively - Prada Shift Dress

You would be surprised at how many women think it is okay to wear a low cut shirt or a short dress/skirt to an interview in the fashion industry… They think, “Oh I just need to look fashionable and I will have that job in a minute”, when in reality yes, looking good is a huge factor, but maintaining a professional appearance and having the right experience and background is just as important as what you are wearing!

With that being said, keep it classy ladies! Make sure you are wearing more conservative options. If you’re wearing a dress, it should come to (or below) the knee and it should not be revealing or low cut AT ALL! For example, the Prada shift dress pictured above is a perfect option that is professional, conservatice, and extremely fashionable!  If you’re wearing a top with pants or a skirt, make sure the top is not too revealing or low cut.  If you’re wearing a skirt, make sure it is an appropriate length (same guidelines as a dress!).

With these five simple tips, you’re sure to land that job that you’ve been dreaming of your entire life! Good luck with that interview, go get ’em girl! :)

XOXO Kristen
